Concise, Practical, Clear

Jake's a masterful teacher, and why I've been a supporter for quite some time. Online lessons are never as good as having an in-person experience with immediate feedback; but Jake's are the best you'll find. The pacing and structure is far better than other online courses, and you've got actual worksheets to practice from, test your knowledge, and engage in.

Jake is the best

For years I struggled with music theory. It's not that complicated, but it just didn't want to stick in my head. I got out of this rut after coming across Jake's videos few years ago. He truly is one of the best teachers on the web, his classes are no BS, straight to the point and he knows what you're asking yourself while watching. This video series is a tidy synthesis of all his teaching.

An extraordinary man, a unique course !

Well organized theory and songwriting course for the composer, the guitarists, or the harmoniously passionate musicians. I highly recommend this. Making it easy to understand and learning to create. I like the fact that you can learn to apply the theory immediately. Jake Lizzio is the best.

You don't have to work through it numerically. You can just go to the sections you want.

It is a pretty thorough course and his teaching style is very relaxed and personable. He's a nice guy and has a great teaching voice. And, he obviously has expert knowledge and ability, and makes ideas and concepts easy to follow. I highly recommend it to all and sundry. Thanks Jake.

A great and accessible course

This course is well designed and explained, and is relevant even if you do not play guitar (I am playing piano). I am not surprised as the regular Youtube videos are also high level. I am looking forward to a possible second part to tackle a bit more the advanced concepts that were only briefly touched at the end.

Blew my mind

It’s easier to understand than any tutors or classes I took. Have been having several “there it is moments” since enrolling in this course. Everything makes much more sense. I was always doubting if what I was doing was correct, this course took all the curves and circles and straighten it all out. One of the best courses I’ve ever seen.

For people who know nothing about music theory

I was a little bit concerned going into this course. I have been a follower of Jake's videos for some time and I never fully understood what he was saying in terms of formal music theory. But I have been blown away by how easy Jake makes it to understand these music theory concepts. Personally, I still have to study and go through lessons multiple times but Jake is a phenomenal teacher.

Music Theory and Songwriting Course FAQs

Probably! Only about 15% of this course is dedicated to the guitar, while the remaining concepts are taught in a way that can easily be applied to any other instrument. However, since all the theory taught is viewed through the lens of the guitar, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you own a guitar before pursuing this course to finish.
This is not a course on guitar playing or technique, but on theory and songwriting. The only skills you are expected to know is how to read guitar tablature, and the absolute basics of guitar playing (how to fret a note, open chords, etc)
I can confidently say that this method of learning will be more effective and valuable for many types of students. Since there is no wasted time or filler, it is more time-efficient than real life lessons where the teacher or student can get distracted. The printable materials are of a higher quality than most private lessons. And the ability to replay a lesson over and over is invaluable for students struggling to understand difficult topics.
Not quite- my YouTube channel explores more advanced topics without explaining the prerequisites. 95% of the content in this course is totally unique and unexplored on my channel, and is taught in a linear fashion as to make sure you’re totally competent by the end. There are only two lessons that include cross over with my YouTube channel. However, after some lessons, you are directed to specific YouTube videos I’ve produced to help expand on your understanding of the previous topics and to help weave my channel in with the course.
Nope! Once purchased you’ll have access for life, including any additional lessons or worksheets that get added in over time.
Currently, no. But I am working on getting a physical version of the course made instead of digital-only. Stay tuned!
