Well rounded

fantastic approach and production value. well explained. well rehearsed. minimal errors (always corrected on screen). very helpful to have split screen between presenter and diagram of information (chord progressions, chord structures, scale tablature, etc). informative examples, especially the Make A Song lesson (start to finish of composing a "new" song). I cannot overstate the value here.

Excellent Course

I found this course incredibly helpful. I've been learning to compose music through a variety of online videos without a real sense of where to start. Everything in this course is laid out clearly and makes sense. I had so many "ah-ha!" moments going through this even on topics I thought I understood before. Jake is an excellent instructor and this course is well worth the money.

The course met & exceeded my expectations

I'm just so happy and grateful I found and bought this course. This was exactly what I was looking for, not flashy tips and tricks but the foundation, the fundamentals with which I can play and build upon. It's time for lots more practicing now!

The practical application of concepts from chord theory and using them to create songs

I was surprised to see no coverage of the circle of 5ths and examples of chord progressions based around it.

Comprehensive knowhow for guitarist / composer, in biz lingo: MECE 🙂 mutually exclusive, collectivelly exhaustive

It was a great course with application on guitar (many other music theory courses are with piano or just notation). Very reasonable lenghts of lessons ready to apply and practice immediatelly. I also enjoyed the style of Jack. It was fun and very practical. It saved me years of embarassement and exhaustive study of theory books. Thanks!

More than a few "A-ha!" moments

I've been playing for over 30 years and I'm mostly self-taught. I have written a couple of dozen songs over that time period. I've bought a shelf full books that almost always get bogged down in minutiae and lose me. Jake's videos are straightforward and highly practical. I've written five songs while taking the class at the same time. It's been a godsend!

Very well presented

Covers the basics well. Jake speaks clearly and explains the concepts well. My only complaint is the navigation. Would be nice for the program to remember the last section completed and take me there when I start.

Jake is an extraordinary communicator.

Beyond his extensive grasp of music theory, Jake’s ability to communicate with students makes this course so worthwhile. I’m an older student of music at this stage of my life and if this course had been available to me when I started learning music I would be in a different place in my journey. Still, it gives me new tools and so much to look forward to musically. Thank you Jake!

Worth the Money

Only downside for me was, I was expecting some exclusive content on modes, transpositions and modulations. These were the topics I was most interested in but some of these gets routed to Jakes YouTube Channel.

Music Theory and Songwriting Course FAQs

Probably! Only about 15% of this course is dedicated to the guitar, while the remaining concepts are taught in a way that can easily be applied to any other instrument. However, since all the theory taught is viewed through the lens of the guitar, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you own a guitar before pursuing this course to finish.
This is not a course on guitar playing or technique, but on theory and songwriting. The only skills you are expected to know is how to read guitar tablature, and the absolute basics of guitar playing (how to fret a note, open chords, etc)
I can confidently say that this method of learning will be more effective and valuable for many types of students. Since there is no wasted time or filler, it is more time-efficient than real life lessons where the teacher or student can get distracted. The printable materials are of a higher quality than most private lessons. And the ability to replay a lesson over and over is invaluable for students struggling to understand difficult topics.
Not quite- my YouTube channel explores more advanced topics without explaining the prerequisites. 95% of the content in this course is totally unique and unexplored on my channel, and is taught in a linear fashion as to make sure you’re totally competent by the end. There are only two lessons that include cross over with my YouTube channel. However, after some lessons, you are directed to specific YouTube videos I’ve produced to help expand on your understanding of the previous topics and to help weave my channel in with the course.
Nope! Once purchased you’ll have access for life, including any additional lessons or worksheets that get added in over time.
Currently, no. But I am working on getting a physical version of the course made instead of digital-only. Stay tuned!
