Very well presented

Covers the basics well. Jake speaks clearly and explains the concepts well. My only complaint is the navigation. Would be nice for the program to remember the last section completed and take me there when I start.

Jake is an extraordinary communicator.

Beyond his extensive grasp of music theory, Jake’s ability to communicate with students makes this course so worthwhile. I’m an older student of music at this stage of my life and if this course had been available to me when I started learning music I would be in a different place in my journey. Still, it gives me new tools and so much to look forward to musically. Thank you Jake!

Worth the Money

Only downside for me was, I was expecting some exclusive content on modes, transpositions and modulations. These were the topics I was most interested in but some of these gets routed to Jakes YouTube Channel.

Worth it! Outstanding, Best course I have taken!

Oustanding class; probably the most thought-out circulum I have taken. Going into the class, I had a fair amount of music theory understaning; this course not only taught me more ideas, but most importantly, it bridged the gaps between all of these pockets of knowledge I had that were unconnected to the bigger picture. The concepts are driven home by the fact that Jake is gifted teacher.

From beginner to almost advanced

I went from not knowing what a scale was used for to understanding mode theory and making my own music 1010!

Great for building the foundations to tackle any musical concepts

Great course for any beginner or intermediate player looking to expand their understanding of the guitar. The only thing negative I noticed were a couple mistakes within the downloadable PDF files. Most notably chord charts written wrong. But the course is so well taught that I think people will be able to know when they come across this and its not a frequent occurrence.

Fantastically organized from details to the big picture

It feels like I learned what would take years with weekly private lessons in only weeks. I think the organization of topics that built upon each other is the strength of this program. I commend Jake for the extra effort and quality he brought to this.

Informative and Inspirational

I've been watching Jake's videos on Youtube for years and find his teaching method the most accommodating. I've not found anyone else who delivers their videos with such ease, professionalism and understanding. He presents theory in such a way that I believe anyone can understand and take something from. This course has been a revelation and inspiration. Thank you! Well worth the money.

Really enjoyed this course

Really liked learning about secondary dominants for some reason. Disliked occasional errors in pdf's such as page 57 G marked as E. This and other errors caused me to double check everything - this was to my benefit in fact. Perhaps the "8" symbol below the treble clef could have been explained in more detail.

Music Theory and Songwriting Course FAQs

Probably! Only about 15% of this course is dedicated to the guitar, while the remaining concepts are taught in a way that can easily be applied to any other instrument. However, since all the theory taught is viewed through the lens of the guitar, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you own a guitar before pursuing this course to finish.
This is not a course on guitar playing or technique, but on theory and songwriting. The only skills you are expected to know is how to read guitar tablature, and the absolute basics of guitar playing (how to fret a note, open chords, etc)
I can confidently say that this method of learning will be more effective and valuable for many types of students. Since there is no wasted time or filler, it is more time-efficient than real life lessons where the teacher or student can get distracted. The printable materials are of a higher quality than most private lessons. And the ability to replay a lesson over and over is invaluable for students struggling to understand difficult topics.
Not quite- my YouTube channel explores more advanced topics without explaining the prerequisites. 95% of the content in this course is totally unique and unexplored on my channel, and is taught in a linear fashion as to make sure you’re totally competent by the end. There are only two lessons that include cross over with my YouTube channel. However, after some lessons, you are directed to specific YouTube videos I’ve produced to help expand on your understanding of the previous topics and to help weave my channel in with the course.
Nope! Once purchased you’ll have access for life, including any additional lessons or worksheets that get added in over time.
Currently, no. But I am working on getting a physical version of the course made instead of digital-only. Stay tuned!
