How to play along with jam tracks

YouTube has thousands of free jam tracks available for you to play over, but it’s no use if you don’t know how to play along to a jam track.

Each of my tracks links to a page with lessons on how to play along with the track and includes techniques and ideas for improvised soloing. I’ve uploaded all of my backing tracks to this YouTube playlist:

JAM TRACK PLAYLIST

You can follow along on screen to see the chords being played and what happens next. There are also scales and shapes shown on screen that you can use to play along. Then in the description it will link to the jam track on this site, which contains links to more lessons that use the jam track. I hope this makes it easier for you to play along with the music I’ll be posting.

New Economy Picking Lesson and an Improvised Guitar Solo for Reddit

Every sunday, /r/guitar has been holding little challenges. This week it was to record a one take improvised guitar solo over a backing track in the Jimi Hendrix style. I was really reluctant to post a first-take but I went ahead and did it anyways, so this includes all sorts of mistakes and stumbles.

Check out the reddit thread here to see everyone elses submissions. There's a lot of talent in that forum, no doubt about it.

There's also a new lesson posted today about economy picking on the electric guitar. What is economy picking and how do you use it? It's a fairly simple concept that requires a lot of practice, but allows you to ascend and descend through scales faster, and also gives you speedy options in playing various guitar licks and passages. Check it out here!
